Introducing Zoom Math

Jeff Hatch was teaching a math class when one of his smartest students showed him a TI-83 Plus graphing calculator. "I was very impressed by the technology," Jeff says, "but I thought I could create better software that would help all my students." In 2004, Jeff quit his teaching job to create Zoom Algebra, an easy-to-use App which answered beginning algebra problems. His brother Rick Hatch joined Jeff in 2005 to help with marketing and Internet sales of Zoom Algebra 1.0.

Algebra Becomes Fast and Easy

Texas Instruments has sold over 40 million graphing calculators since 1990, but these calculators were difficult for some students to learn, because math problems on the calculator did not look the same as problems in a textbook. But with Zoom Algebra installed, math problems looked right. In 2006, Zoom Algebra 2.0 was released, with the added ability to show each step of an Algebra 1 problem, enabling students to correct their own mistakes.

Enter I.Q. Joe

Jeff and Rick founded I.Q. Joe, LLC in 2006, as President and CEO, respectively. Soon their cousin Vance Hatch, an experienced entrepreneur and manager, joined the company and was named the new CEO, while Rick assumed the role of Executive Director. Under this team's leadership, I.Q. Joe continued to attend math teacher conferences and spread the word about Zoom Math. Some math teachers gasped the first time they saw a textbook-style fraction typed in Zoom Algebra! "How did you do that?" they asked.

Zoom Math Goes Global

After Texas Instruments heard educators' reactions to Zoom Algebra, TI asked I.Q. Joe to develop another App which would apply the Zoom Math interface to ordinary calculator operations. Beginning in 2008, Texas Instruments pre-installed I.Q. Joe's new "App4Math" on the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. Now students everywhere can use textbook math notation on their graphing calculators at no additional charge. Since the debut of App4Math, Zoom Apps have been downloaded in more than 100 countries around the world. "And we still have more ideas for helping even more students!" Jeff says.
